Best Sun Spot Solutions

It’s that time of year again to get out the sunblock, the floppy hats and guard against damaging UV rays. But what do you do if the sun spots have already taken their toll? Here are some of our favorite remedies for reducing hyperpigmentation, sunspots or melasma.

Kiehl’s has a lightweight, super powerful, fast-acting serum that seems to be quite effective in reducing in breaking about the melanin that causes sunspots. Here is some information from Kiehl’s website:
Clearly Corrective DARK SPOT SOLUTION ($49.50) is a fast-acting serum that evens skin tone and diminishes dark spots to impart overall radiance and luminosity to the skin:

• In as little as 2 weeks, 55% of women clinically demonstrated a significant reduction in dark spot intensity.

• In 4 weeks, 69% of women clinically demonstrated a continued reduction in dark spots intensity and 73% of women showed a significant reduction in acne scarring.  Reduction in other skin discolorations was clinically evident among 69% of women.

• In 8 weeks, 87% of women clinically demonstrated more uniform skin tone to deliver breakthrough clarity.

• With continued daily usage, Clearly Corrective helps to prevent the formation of future dark spots and other skin discolorations.

NIA 24 Skin Strengthening Complex (cost $85.00)

NIA 24 has been getting a lot of buzz ever since Courtney Cox and Dr. Oz mentioned using the line. This niacin powered product is part of a line that is designed to improve severely sun-damaged skin. Make sure you ask for a sample to see if you have an allergic reaction because some people have mentioned sensitivity. We tested it and the results have been positive. It’s worth it to splurge on NIA’s sunblock which has the same lightening abilities paired with UVA/UVB protection. A MUST to keep your skin smooth and clear!

31 Things

I’m working my way, slowly but surely, through Ali Edwards 31 Things Class over on Big Picture Classes. So far we have explored five unrelated yet thought-provoking subjects of every day life.

  • Jewelry
  • Morning Routine
  • Read
  • Spirit
  • Conversation

Just posing these daily questions stretches your mind in ways you will find enlightening. For example, the first day’s prompt of jewelry immediately made me think of the two gold bracelets my mother wore practically every day during my childhood. These bracelets made a familiar jingle every time she moved her arms. I used to hear them when she turned her key in the door, signaling she was home from work or when she pushed open my bedroom door in the morning, waking me up for school. This was the sound I heard while she cooked dinner, turned the pages of a children’s book while reading aloud, and brushed my hair. There were so many memories that came pouring out from that one simple “thing.” Who knew that just having to tell a story about jewelry would bring back so much joy and childhood happiness. It unlocked more stories than I even knew existed and turned something so simple into something profound and memorable. This is the power of storytelling. This is the power of the written word. Only a few days in and I am already thrilled to be taking part in the 31 Things journey.

My Weekend

Nadia Knows Best by Jill Mansell

This weekend was spent mostly in recuperation. I had some minor surgery on Friday and was relatively immobile for the entire weekend. But luckily, the sun was shining and I had a nice place to sit and relax outside under a big shady tree. I did something that I never get around to doing on weekends…I read! Reading is my absolute favorite pastime but it’s ridiculous how infrequently I allow myself to do it during the day. So this weekend was pure relaxation and indulgence in my favorite thing. Luckily, I started a book that piqued my interest immediately and I found myself flying through the pages. Just pure escapism and exactly what the doctor ordered.

I’m looking forward to being back on my game because there have been so many interesting challenges that I have found online that I want to further explore. For example, Elise Blaha is doing a series on finding shapes in every day life and photographing them. I’m still doing Ali Edwards 31 Things, which started last week and of course, the ever present Project Life.

I wish I had more personal pictures to add to this post but as I said, I’m a bit out of commission. As soon as I am up and around again, I will be bringing lots of snapshots of my life to Daily Moxie. Stay tuned…

Crafting, Creating and Cards

For the past few years I have been very interested in scrapbooking as a way to journal your life and use art to depict certain moments in time. I’ve been inspired by a number of people within the industry (Ali Edwards is a genius) and I use their work as creative fuel (Becky Higgins, Elise Blaha, Elizabeth Kartchner, Ann-Marie, and Amy Tangerine). The beautiful way they capture a day, an event, a holiday, a personal success and put their own personal mark on it is so encouraging and motivating. I am currently working on Becky Higgins Project Life and will be taking part in Ali Edwards 31 Things online course starting later this week. I’m also working on Ali Edwards One Word project.

I find “Life Art”, as Ali Edwards defines it, to be therapeutic. To lose yourself for hours and be able to concentrate on nothing else but layout design, colors, graphics and mixed media is probably one of the most soothing and rewarding ways to deal with the curveballs life throws you. Right now I am finding that making cards is a great way to keep my hands moving, my brain engaged and my artistic side fully satiated. To spend an hour cutting, adhering, designing, writing and watching what started as a vision come together into a cohesive piece of art is the best mood elevator. Here are some of the cards I’ve been working on. I do it for no other reason than the wonderful feeling of accomplishment and inspiration.

For the longest time I have watched these women (Ali, Elise, Lizzy, Becky, Ann-Marie, Amy) do things that astound me and fill me with hope and excitement. I have worked alongside them, quietly, expressing myself through scrapbooking, and daily documenting and “life art.” Basically, I have made stuff. And I love what I’ve made. And I look forward to seeing what I will make. I have had this site for quite some time and haven’t really known what to do with it. I have been trying to find my footing. Suddenly, it all seems so clear. I’m not afraid to take a step forward and share the work I love with all my heart. I’m looking forward to starting the 31 Things adventure, to continuing the One Word adventure and to creating my own adventures along the way. I’m looking forward to sharing this all with you. But most importantly, I’m looking forward to having a small space to hang my work, a virtual hook.

My (Future) Agenda

I am literally using my blog to remind myself to BUY this agenda in August…yes, you will be mine!

Where the Wild Things Are

“Live your Life. Live your Life. Live your Life.” ~ Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)

Keep Moving Towards Happiness

Exercise

Mondays. They’re pretty tough. Typically you feel overtired and overwhelmed with the work load that has built up over the weekend. But there is nothing that solves the problems of a Monday better than exercise. It clears your head and gives you a feeling of power and control, something that we often feel is lacking in our lives. It erases guilt for any overindulging you may have done (or plan to do). And most importantly, it makes you feel ALIVE!

I am grateful for the way a simple run makes me feel more alive. I am grateful that I am able to go for a simple run every day of my life. I am grateful for the simple power of putting one foot in front of the other.

This Girl

This girl is the love of my life and has filled up the past nine and half years with so much joy and jubilation that I can’t imagine the days that came before. How boring and bleak those days must have been. How devastatingly dull. But today. Today she is here. Today I hear stories of playground drama and art class achievements. She shows me the joy in simple blessings that are all around us. The sounds of puppies playing, the beauty of a rock and birds landing precariously close to our feet. She sees it all, notices everything and graces me with the opportunity to see the world through her eyes. Her innocent, precocious and hopeful eyes. All that is beautiful in the world comes shining through and I am left speechless. Speechless and blessed.

Laughter Really is the Best Medicine

Laughter

Last week I watched Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, a documentary focusing on one year in the life of the famous comedianne Joan Rivers. She made an interesting point while being heckled during a show. She had made a joke about Helen Keller being the dream daughter because she couldn’t speak and a man started yelling from the audience saying the joke wasn’t funny because he had a deaf son. It was a sad moment (and could have been terribly awkward for Joan) but she said to the man, yelling from the audience, “We have to laugh at the tragedies in life, it gives them less power over us.” She is right. Laughter is one of the best ways to handle the obstacles that pop up in our path. Joan also showed that even if it is impossible to avoid fear, insecurities and failure, the best way to handle it is to keep moving forward, never give up and always persevere. Joan Rivers is nothing if not tenacious and determined and that is why she is still a star at 77 years old. It is inspiring that even in our darkest days we can find humor.

Signs of Life

I picked this book up on a whim, truth be told, I liked the cover. I was also intrigued by the subtitle, Finding the Best in Yourself During the Worst Life Has to Offer. Personally, I’m in that kind of emotional space right now. What is so delightfully inspiring is that I can’t put this book down. The story is heartbreaking, Natalie Taylor lost her husband, Joshua, to an accident when she was five months pregnant. Signs of Life is her personal journey, written with the most poetic, honest, authentic and raw details. I am literally in love with her writing style. I am going to write a much more detailed post on this book when I finish. Stay tuned. (And in the meantime, pick up your own copy of Natalie’s inspiring story).

Nifty

Now that I’m officially a MAC person (still waiting for my phone contract to end so that I can be 100% with the iPhone), I am falling in love with the streamlined style of Apple products. This cool shelf is designed in the same vein as Apple products and looks like it would be incredibly helpful in keeping your desk organized.

Faith

sometimes it seems

the world is crashing down

things are failing

everyone’s faltering

fears abound

but in your heart

deep within the pain and suffering

you know

that hope is stronger than pain

faith is stronger than fear

and this too shall pass

Speak Your Mind

A few months ago I was running errands and happened to overhear two people talking about someone I knew. These women were saying disparaging things and laughing at their observations, cruel observations. I was having a particularly low day and felt, quite frankly, fed up with the world. As I started to turn away, to go down a different aisle and move on with my day, I stopped. Suddenly and painfully aware that what I was listening to, what I had heard, was unfair and if I didn’t speak up, no one would. I confronted these women and told them that what they were saying was insensitive, that if I could hear them, others could, as well. I wanted them to be made aware of the power of words and the ease with which we can hurt others. The women were caught off guard and I’m sure felt that I was wrong to be weighing in or scolding them for their gossip, but I followed my heart and spoke my mind and it still stays with me as a moment of pure clarity and strength.

Speaking up for yourself or others, standing your ground and speaking your mind does not guarantee that people will understand or even listen. It does not guarantee that they will respect, appreciate or even like you for it. But it does guarantee that you will like yourself…no…LOVE yourself!

Yoga

So far I am loving yoga. Three days in a row I have bent and twisted my way to clarity and a sense of calm. Beginning to understand what all the fuss is about. I am such a beginner but in just three days I can feel a huge difference. The flexibility, the strength and surprisingly, the sweat! I honestly never realized what a demanding workout yoga can be. I think I’m in love!

I do tend to get overly hyped up about something and then it fizzles out pretty quickly, so I will keep you posted. But first, I will leave you with this…“Yoga offers the promise of remaining centered in the midst of turbulence.” -Deepak Chopra

iMovie

Random statement of the day, I LOVE iMOVIE! I love it! I have been playing around with it for less than 24 hours (after taking a class at the Apple store) and I absolutely love it. I could become obsessed with this new toy! Slowly but surely I am becoming a Mac person. I never thought the day would come but I’m so glad it did!

To Get Better at Something…Keep Doing It!

Don't Break the Chain

My goal to push myself to write something every single day definitely jumpstarted something in my brain. Of course, it didn’t work entirely. I missed ONE DAY! I didn’t blog yesterday! Actually, in all fairness, I did write a blog post but I wasn’t 100% happy with it so I didn’t publish it. So does that count? I’m not sure. The perfectionist in me says “NO!” If I can’t scroll through 7 consecutive days of posts, then I failed. But what’s great about failing is that it gives you a change in perspective. It gives you another chance to do it again, this time seeing what worked and what didn’t.

I got a little lost in my message. What was my overall purpose for the site? Did I want it to be a design-related blog where I can show off the cute things I find online? Did I want it to be a personal journey blog where I explore things I do and what I learn from them? Did I want it to feel like a self-help blog where I help others? Yes! All of the above! But really, what it all boils down to is that this blog, this Daily Moxie adventure, is getting me in the habit of writing something creative every single day. So once again, I’m going to give it a go. 7 days, 7 blog posts (or more, if I feel like posting more than one in a day). Tuesday to Tuesday.

Jerry Seinfeld once said that his key to success and to become a better comedian was to write something every single day. Seinfeld used (and possibly still uses) a calendar system to hold himself accountable. Every day that he would write, he would put a big red X on that day in the calendar. As the days added up, the chain of red X’s grew. He could literally see his accomplishments physically in front of him and he didn’t want to break the chain. So his advice on becoming better at something is Don’t Break the Chain! You can use this for anything, fitness, family, reading, organizing, cooking. Making sure you do something every single day that is moving you closer to your goal is better than waiting around for inspiration to hit or waiting until you feel “in the mood.” Start now. Do it now! …and don’t break the chain.
