Flawed and Fearless

beauty

Last night my sister M called from a hotel in Maine. She’s there for a photo shoot for a profile in Glamour. After detailing the less than glamorous journey she experienced in getting to this tiny town in Maine, she told me about her fascinating travel companion, a famous makeup artist. When my sister started asking the makeup artist questions about the application of makeup and how best to cover up a few imperfections on her face, the makeup artist looked at my sisters’ face and immediately said, “Why did you point them out to me? I would have never noticed them if you hadn’t pointed them out. Never draw people’s attention to your flaws, only accentuate the areas you love.”

Talk about a life lesson when you least expect it?! How many of us point out our flaws, hoping to beat people to the punch. Let others know that we are aware of the areas we need to work on. But why? What does this do for us except accentuate the things we dislike and, as the makeup artist explained, draw others’ eyes immediately to our flaws.

This leads to the larger issue. Why are we so critical of what we see in the mirror? Why do we have to issue judgments, label things as imperfections, get frustrated by our own appearance? Why can’t we be more accepting and appreciative of the face that stares back at us? The face that has laughed and smiled, cried and comforted. Our scars and lines are maps of our journey, a life fully lived and deeply felt. We need to throw away our ideas of perfection and take a good long look in the mirror…and smile! This is the only life we’ve got and this is the only face/hair/eyes/body we’ve got so I say accentuate the positive and ignore the negative and live your life to the fullest…flaws and all!

On a side note: What I love about blogging and what I have learned from other extraordinary bloggers out there, is that by giving yourself a schedule to adhere to (a post/essay a day) forces you to find the questions, the life lessons, the pearls of wisdom in the common every day occurrences. You really begin looking for the bigger questions in the small details of life.  You truly live the examined life and it makes everything that much sweeter. So thank you to all of the women who inspire me daily!

The Happiness Found in Doing Things!

huffingtonposthappiness

I just finished an impressive article from The Huffington Post on The Hidden Key to Happiness. Joe Robinson, author of Don’t Miss Your Life, addresses an interesting attitude about finding and discovering happiness in life. He explains that it is more about the doing then the acquiring.

Experiences ultimately bring us more happiness than possessing material objects because experiences allow us to live in the now. Robinson explains that by immersing yourself in an activity, whether it be a vacation, a dance class or even dinner with friends, you are much more alive in the moment. You allow yourself to step outside of your typical worries about yesterday and tomorrow and live in the now. It is crucial to get into the “life participant column” says Robinson.  Another thought-provoking concept that Robinson found in the research for his book is that people actually like you better when they see you as someone with interesting life experiences.

“Do too much watching and not enough experiencing and you wind up looking in the window of life.” ~Joe Robinson

Robinson writes that we are too focused on our careers and seek too much of our happiness from the day-to-day schedule, performance evaluations and paychecks. He says we need to disconnect and not see spending time doing enjoyable things as “slacking.”

I definitely fall into that category. I work 80 plus hours a week. When I’m not eating dinner or watching a reality show, I’m working. The irony isn’t lost on me that I watch more “reality” than live it.

But at least I am recognizing the changes I need to make. I need to stop making to do lists and start doing things. I need to log off from my virtual world and connect with the real world. I need to step away from work from time-to-time and step into new activities and gatherings. My goal for the new year is to start taking more time for myself, start enjoying life more and start living in the now. Yes, it is going to be baby steps. You can’t dive right in to a new way of life, but it is the thoughtful and concerted effort that counts. It is being aware that changes need to be made. It is recognizing the flaws in the system and making strides to fix them.

Do you live in the now? Do you value experiences over material objects? What are you NOT doing that you wish you were?

Running, Eating, Shopping…

Workout: Ran 4.5 miles/45 minutes. After a long weekend with too many snacks, the treadmill kicked my butt. I should blame the Cheesecake Factory turkey club but it was just TOO GOOD and I refuse to say anything negative about my beloved club.

Right now, as I compile my Christmas list, I’m thinking I might need to add some workout gear/clothes to my list for Santa.

It seems even celebrities have to stop and shop for active gear.

I’m feeling like I need some tank tops and capri running pants. I need to schedule a trip to Marshalls and TJMaxx to see if I can find some Nike stuff at a reasonable price.  If anyone can recommend some good online spots for affordable, name-brand active wear, let me know!

Normal Jogger…

Here’s a pic of me on my way to the gym on Friday. Ran 3 miles. Not a lot but a good start for a beginner runner. I took this picture as I was heading out the door (with my adorable niece who was on her way to play rehearsal).

What you can’t see are the 18,000 bobby pins I have in my hair because I have a million wispies that tend to go crazy when I run.

I am loving this blog, Skinny Runner, and have been scrolling through it for awhile. I particularly like the running outfit pics she posts because that is honestly one of the most time-consuming aspects of working out…what to wear. Comfort is key! It’s funny how you don’t realize the little things that are going to drive you crazy until you hit the pavement (or treadmill).  For example, on Friday, I happened to wear pants that really wanted to slide off my body. I found myself continually pulling up my pants like a little kid who needs a belt! Well, I guess you live and you learn…or rather, you run and you learn. Well, that’s all I’ve got for today…stay tuned tomorrow for my next trip to the gym…in the meantime, this is “Normal Jogger” signing off. (You will only get that if you read the “About Me” section of Skinny Runner).

Boot Camp…for Getting Things Done

calendar

I was just reading Gretchen Rubin’s latest post on her Happiness Project and what she wrote immediately resonated with me. Instead of paraphrasing or just providing a link to her site, I wanted to post a complete portion of her post. She writes about how she was able to write a book in a month because she followed a “boot camp” mentality for getting it done. Anyone who blogs (or writes) will appreciate this stellar advice.

Whenever anyone asks me for advice about how to keep up with writing for a blog, I always say: “Post every day.” Although this sounds arduous, many people find, as I do, that weirdly it’s easier to write every day than just a few times a week.

I think the Boot Camp approach helps the creative process for several reasons, and it helps with all kinds of projects: finishing a photo album, a gardening project, a wood-working project.

  • Because you have to get so much done, you don’t have time to listen to your internal critic. You just get something done and keep moving, instead of sitting, paralyzed.
  • Progress itself is reassuring and inspiring. Panic tends to set in when you find yourself getting nothing done, day after day.
  • Because you’re so focused on your project, you begin to make deeper connections and to see more possibilities, instead of being constantly distracted by outside concerns.
  • Because of the intensity, you can hop in and out of the project, without having to take time to acclimate yourself. I have a writer friend who’s married to a painter, and she says their test for working well is when they can sit down and work if they have a spare ten minutes.
  • You lower your standards. If you’re producing a page a week, or one blog post a week, or one sketch a week, you expect it to be pretty darned good, and you fret about quality. Often, however, folks achieve their best work from grinding out the product.
  • Practice, practice, practice. My novel was terrible, but I think the sheer doing of it helped my writing, just the way practicing scales helps a pianist. The more you practice, the better you’ll become.
  • Because you have a voracious need for material, you become hyper-aware of everything happening around you — and ideas begin to flood your mind.
  • You can use this approach even if you’re working on a creative project on the side, with all the pressing obligations of a job, family, etc. Instead of feeling perpetually frustrated that you don’t have any time for your project, you make yourself make time — for a specific period.
  • It’s fun! I don’t have the urge to climb mountains or run marathons, but I got the same thrill of exertion from writing a novel in a month.

When I’m having trouble getting work done on a big project, my impulse sometimes is to take smaller, easier steps. Sometimes that helps, but sometimes it helps more to take bigger, more ambitious steps instead. By doing more instead of less, I get a boost of energy and focus.

Little Brown Dress by Essie

littlebrowndress

I bought this yesterday on a whim. I was out buying materials for my Halloween costume.  I was a Top Gun fighter pilot but very few people were able to figure it out. Probably because I didn’t leave my sunglasses on but the apartment where the party was held was very dark and the sunglasses just didn’t last.

Anyway, I wanted a nail color that fit with the overall brown, green, beige palette and I found Little Brown Dress from Essie. It was perfect! Two coats and you are good to go…it also has enough of a natural shine to it that you don’t even need a clear gloss top coat. Technically, I didn’t do the clear gloss coat because I was running out the door (why are the nails always the last thing to get done?) and just didn’t have time. The overall look is very sophisticated and glamorous and I am definitely a fan of the quality of the Essie polishes. Typically I stick with the pale pink palette for my nails but this was a very nice change of pace, without going completely dark or black. Highly recommended!

I have been hearing a lot about the La Roche-Posay product line and am thinking that I might need to make a quick trip to CVS tomorrow to snag this little beauty.

While I’m there, I think I need to grab some Neutrogena wipes. I am a huge fan of makeup removing wipes in general but I have never tried Neutrogena’s Deep Clean line.

Skyn Iceland Pure Cloud Cleanser

Skyn Iceland Pure Cloud Cleanser

I haven’t tried the Cloud Cleanser from Skyn Iceland yet but I literally can’t wait! I keep hearing great things about it and it seems that the cleansers that are tissue off seem to be the most successful and productive. I wanted to wait for the cold air and dry skin season to hit and with November just days away, I think the timing is perfect. According to the label, this is a gentle, tissue-off cream cleanser for dry, irritated skin that has been depleted by internal or environmental stress. Infused with pure Icelandic glacial waters, replenishing extracts, and natural moisturizers, it gently removes dirt and makeup (even eye makeup!), without depleting the complexion. Skin emerges soft, glowing, and hydrated. What it is formulated WITHOUT:- Parabens- Sulfates- Synthetic Fragrances- Synthetic Dyes- Petrochemicals- Phthalates- TriclosanWhat else you need to know:An all-natural muslin cloth (included) works with the cleanser to gently massage skin and help increase circulation. The non-foaming, residue-free, non-drying formula leaves skin feeling fresh and restored.

Update: Just washed my face with the Cloud Cleanser and apparently it COMES WITH a muslin cloth. You are instructed to apply the cleanser to dry skin (how much am I going to LOVE this when the weather gets down right chilly?) and then you wet the muslin cloth with warm water and rub your skin with the cloth in a circular motion. By the time you are done removing the cleanser your skin will feel completely exfoliated and buffed.  Inside my package of the Cloud Cleanser was the Skyn Cloud Cream…I think I’m in love! It is the most soothing cream I have ever applied. It doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy or oily but just completely moisturized and hydrated. Excellent product! I am going to continue to use the cleanser and may consider stopping by Sephora to buy a jar of the Cloud Cream. I will keep you all posted on my Icelandic Skyn adventure!

Trick-or-Treat

How much do you love these trick-or-treat bags? I found them over at The Purl Bee and there’s still time before Halloween to make these for the little cuties in your life.

What I Want for Christmas…

signet-ring-ginette-nyI am in love with this ring! I want it for my middle finger. I think it is so classically elegant and sophisticated. I found this gorgeous ring on Joanna Goddard’s site (which I am now officially obsessed with and have been scrolling through for the better part of an hour). Check out A Cup of Jo, you will not be disappointed.

The Beauty of Homemade Food

homemade-is-best-2

Stylist Evelina Bratell and photographer Carl Kleiner have come up with the most ingenious (and delicious) way of depicting food in their new book. It is the most visually pleasing look at baking you will ever see. I particularly like the above raspberry cookies.

Just a little over one month before…

I head to Australia with OPRAH!!

Thanksgiving Napkins!

thanksgiving-napkins-2010-4

I don’t know what has come over me but I have such a tremendous desire to cook, craft and create! (The three C’s!)

I may have to pull out my old sewing machine and get to work on these fantastic Thanksgiving napkins!  I must admit that I have not used a sewing machine since high school home ec and I still have an unfinished quilt sitting in my closet to prove it.

Best Dinner Ever

babyspinach

My new go-to dinner is so simple and yet completely satisfying and delicious. Marinated steak tips (or just a strip steak cut into bite sized pieces), crumbled blue cheese, baby spinach and a creamy balsamic dressing. Add salt if desired.

It takes under 20 minutes to prepare and tastes like a gourmet meal.

Enjoy!

Sweet “P”

DSCN0062

On Friday it will be my niece, Sweet P’s, 8th birthday. I still can’t believe that the little girl I watched cling to life with tiny, birdlike fingers will be turning 8! The little girl who arrived three months early, weighing just over 2lbs is now the tallest girl in her class. How does that happen? Yesterday she came over to tell me all about her birthday party and how she is inviting her entire class (even the boys!) to a bowling party. She was so excited and practically spilling over with joy at the thought of a birthday party. She clutched the bright pink Hello Kitty invitations in her hands and the happiness danced in her eyes.

I couldn’t help but let the tiny thoughts of fear sneak into my mind, as they so often do when moments of pure joy engulf us. Because with excitement comes disappointment. What if the boys create trouble? What if the girls create drama? What if not everyone comes to little Sweet P’s party? I know that the path ahead of her will inevitably be filled with stones. She’ll trip and fall. She may even get hurt. We all do. It is inevitable in life that you fly and you fall, peaks and valleys. But when looking at her innocent, joyful face, I want nothing more than to protect her from anything and everything dark and cloudy. But I know I can’t do this, in the same way my mother couldn’t do it for me and I won’t be able to do it for my children. We have to let our loved ones fall because only when they fall do they learn how to pick themselves up and keep moving forward, climbing towards the next peak (or in this case, Hello Kitty birthday party).

Weekend Activities

vintage-halloween-pumpkin-woman-black-cat

Busy, busy weekend! Went to a wild and crazy birthday party for a 2-year-old and his 5-year-old brother (they were born 10 days apart). It’s all working out now but once they start asserting their independence, it could become a little difficult for their parents’ to do the joint birthday party thing.

Hit downtown Salem for some dinner and drinks with friends. Salem in October is quite a trip and definitely not to be missed! It is packed with people, all dressed in costume and extremely festive. Halloween is not just another holiday around here.

Finally, I will be blogging about my Australian Adventure with Oprah for The Boston Globe.

Struggle to Balance

relaxation

A writer whom I very much admire posed an interesting question this week. She wrote a blog post about the struggle to achieve balance in life. She was referring to her own struggles as a working mother. I am not yet a mother, but I am a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a girlfriend and a working woman. I, too, face a daily struggle to keep my life in balance.

The writer asked, “Do you ever doubt the choices you have made – and are making – about the way you spend your time?

I faced this exact dilemma over the weekend. As the owner of my own company, I work 80 plus hours a week. My life is my job. I have been doing it for almost 7 years and have built a successful company but with success comes sacrifice. When the weekends come I am able to see the draining effects of work.  I literally run myself ragged Monday through Friday and oftentimes even on the weekend. However, when I am given a free weekend with no obligations, I become selfish. I don’t want to venture out. I don’t want to see or do anything. I want to curl up in bed with a book or catch up on my reality television. Unfortunately, this is not very conducive to having, making or keeping friends. So I have to give of myself to make others happy, even if it is not something I feel like doing.

Why do I feel this urge to put others first even if I so desperately need the time to myself, to recharge, unwind, take stock of my life and just relax? But here is the catch. Typically, when I end up “forcing” myself to get out of bed and DO something, I almost never regret it. For example, this weekend, I promised my brother I would take him out for a night on the town. (We live in a small New England town, so a night on the town isn’t as wild and electric as it sounds.) But it was wonderful! We had dinner at a fantastic little restaurant, ate the best food I have ever had and then went for drinks at a local bar. Just me, my brother and M. We laughed, we talked, we shared stories and jokes. It was good. It was enjoyable. It was fun. It was exactly what I needed but not what I thought I wanted. It wasn’t a night spent lounging in bed, doing nothing. And now it’s Monday and I’m back to work, burning the midnight oil so to speak. The weekend seems so far away and my days of anticipated relaxation are behind me now. But I don’t regret giving away my free time. My balance is completely off, but I’m okay with that. I enjoyed myself and I laughed and sometimes that is the best relaxation you can ask for. Maybe sometimes we don’t know what’s best for us and it’s smart to just go with the flow, wherever it may take you.

Tiny Dancers

stylemepretty

There are so many things I adore about this picture that I don’t even know where to begin. I found it on Style Me Pretty. It was from a California wedding where the bride chose a soft-pink palette with gorgeous floral arrangements including my all time favorite flower, the pink peony. The brilliant photographer, Lori Palladino, captured the beauty with elegance and style.

Halloween!

Martha Stewart Pumpkin Carving Kit

I am so excited about Halloween this year! I’m attending a Halloween costume party, plan on sightseeing in Salem, MA, and am going to decorate to within an inch of my life. This year is going to be all about living life as fully as possible and pulling as much joy from every day. This weekend I am going to make a trip to Macy’s to pick up Martha Stewart’s Pumpkin Carving Kit.

Martha Stewart Collection Pie Pan

And no fall is complete without a homemade pumpkin pie. I love the idea of having the instructions on the pan itself. It reminds me of the bartender glasses that have drink ingredients and measurement etched on the glass. Clever and efficient. I may just have to snag myself one of these pie plates as well. (There’s also an apple version…decisions, decisions, decisions…)

An Embarrassment of Riches?

markzuckerberg

Today Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.com, donated $100 million to the Newark public school systems and before the announcement was even officially made, the critics were out for blood. The New York Post reported the story of his donation by calling Zuckerberg a “conniving backstabber who may have stolen the idea for his social networking site.” New York Magazine called it the “PR move of the month.” And many are speculating that this was only done to improve his social image and erase some of the ill will that has befallen him since it was announced by the Forbes 400 that he was the 35th wealthiest person in America. The Wall Street Journal even states that Zuckerberg has “learned the offsetting PR value of philanthropy.”

Are we really going to encourage people to do good deeds when this is how we treat them? Mark Zuckerberg is donating $100 MILLION to the Newark public school system! I feel like I need to keep repeating that, lest anyone forget.  Yes, we live in a cynical society because we’ve been privy to the dirty underbelly of the wealthy, powerful and political and maybe I’m being overly optimistic and naïve when wanting to believe and see the best in people. I really do feel that Zuckerberg is doing a great thing for the educational system in Newark because no matter what, those children are going to benefit.

When he made his announcement on today’s Oprah Winfrey Show, Zuckerberg said, “I’ve committed to the startup education foundation whose first project will be a $100 million project grant.” Oprah had to actually urge her audience to give a standing ovation but I think that had more to do with shock then disrespect. “Every child deserves a good education. I’ve had a lot of opportunities in my life and a lot of that comes from having gone to really good schools and I just want to do what I can to make sure that everyone has those same opportunities,” Zuckerberg continued.  He said he chose Newark because he “really just believes in these guys,” referring to Newark Mayor Cory Booker. “Being good in business is about finding really great leaders and investing in them.”  Zuckerberg said that his overall goal is to turn Newark into a symbol of educational excellence and Oprah let Zuckerberg know that all eyes will be on Newark.  She also informed the audience that she actually had to convince Mark Zuckerberg to go public with his donation, something he had originally wanted to do anonymously!

Whether or not you believe he did this altruistically or with ulterior motives, at least we can agree that this will change the educational landscape of public schools and possibly inspire other financial leaders to step up and give back to our educational systems all across the country.
